What is the Dual Diagnosis Program?

The Dual Diagnosis Program at Hope Restoration Center provides integrated treatment for adults living with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Co-occurring conditions are more common than most people realize — and they require a treatment approach that addresses both simultaneously, not one at a time.

Our licensed clinicians treat the whole person — the mental health condition and the substance use disorder together — in a structured, compassionate outpatient environment in Sandy, Utah. Your program may include:

Dual Diagnosis treatment is ideal for adults who have struggled to make progress treating only one condition at a time, those stepping down from inpatient or detox care, or individuals whose mental health symptoms and substance use are deeply intertwined and cannot be meaningfully separated.

Step 1 — Comprehensive Dual Diagnosis Assessment −

Every client completes a comprehensive assessment covering both their mental health history and substance use history. This gives our clinical team the full picture needed to build an integrated treatment plan — ensuring both conditions are addressed from day one.

Step 2 — Your Integrated Treatment Plan +

Your clinician develops a personalized integrated treatment plan — covering both your mental health needs and substance use recovery simultaneously. The plan outlines therapy modalities, session frequency, progress milestones, and relapse prevention strategies.

Step 3 — Concurrent Mental Health & Substance Use Therapy +

Unlike sequential treatment that addresses one condition first, our integrated approach treats both simultaneously. Individual therapy, group sessions, and skills workshops all address the interplay between your mental health and substance use — helping you understand the connection and build tools for both.

Step 4 — Motivational Interviewing & Skills Building +

Using Motivational Interviewing (MI), CBT, and DBT, your clinician helps you explore your relationship with substances and mental health — without judgment. Skills workshops cover emotional regulation, distress tolerance, coping strategies, and relapse prevention techniques that work in real life.

Step 5 — Progress Reviews & Plan Adjustments +

Progress is reviewed regularly with your clinical team. Because co-occurring conditions can shift in intensity, your treatment plan is adjusted as needed to ensure both conditions are effectively addressed throughout your program.

Step 6 — Relapse Prevention & Long-Term Aftercare +

Before completing the program, your team builds a comprehensive relapse prevention and aftercare plan — covering both mental health maintenance and substance use recovery, including step-down therapy, community support, peer resources, and medication continuity where applicable.

Dual Diagnosis — Specific Questions

Can I receive treatment for both conditions at the same time? +

Yes. Our Dual Diagnosis program treats both your mental health condition and substance use together from day one — not one after the other. This integrated approach is what makes lasting recovery possible.

What if I am not sure I have a dual diagnosis? +

That is completely okay. Many people come to us unsure of exactly what they are dealing with. Our licensed clinicians will complete a thorough assessment and help you understand your situation — with no pressure and no judgment.

How long does IOP last? +

IOP typically runs 8 to 12 weeks depending on your clinical progress. Your clinician reviews your progress regularly and adjusts the plan as needed. When you are ready, a supported transition plan is put in place to maintain your progress.

Is my information kept confidential? +

Yes. All services at Hope Restoration Center are provided with strict confidentiality. Your personal information and treatment details are protected in accordance with applicable federal and state privacy laws. We will not share your information with your employer, family, or anyone else without your explicit written consent — except in specific safety situations required by law.

Does insurance cover treatment? +

Many insurance plans cover outpatient mental health services. We encourage you to contact your insurance provider directly to confirm your benefits before starting. Do I need a referral to start? +

No referral is required to contact us or complete an initial assessment. You can reach out directly via our website, phone, or contact form. If you are being referred by a healthcare professional, we welcome that information — but it is not a requirement to begin the process.

What if I have tried treatment before and it did not work? +

Many people who come to us have tried treatment before — sometimes for one condition but not both. When mental health and substance use are treated separately, outcomes are often limited. Our integrated approach addresses both together, which is why it works differently.

Will my employer find out I am in treatment? +

No. Your participation in any program at Hope Restoration Center is completely confidential. We will not contact your employer or disclose any information about your treatment without your explicit written consent. Many of our clients attend sessions before or after work without any disruption to their professional life.

Can I leave the program early if I need to? +

Participation in our programs is voluntary. You may choose to leave at any time. However, we strongly encourage you to discuss any concerns with your clinician before making that decision — in many cases, adjustments can be made to the schedule or approach that address the issue. Your clinician will always support your autonomy while ensuring you have the clinical information needed to make an informed choice.

What if I miss a session? +

We understand that life happens. If you need to miss a session, please notify us as early as possible. Your clinician will work with you to make up the session where possible and ensure your treatment plan stays on track. Consistent attendance is important for progress — your care team will support you in maintaining it.
